Antigua, Semana Santa, Guatemala
Each year on Holy week several orthodox churches in Antigua, Guatemala celebrate Semana Santa by organizing elaborate processions through the streets of the town. Inticate street carpets (alfombas) made of pine needles, flowers and other plant materials are layed down for the processions to walk over. The crucifixtion re-enactments consist of carrying massive andas (floats) that trample the street carpets each day and then they are rebuilt for the next days events. These are colorful proceedings and are one of the most interesting religious events to photograph.
